4 January - Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy (TISSA) Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) at the EDC Hotels & Resorts, today.
At the event, UUM was represented by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak while ICAN was represented by the President, Mallam Isma'ila Muhammadu Zakari. The signing of the MoU was witnessed by the Dean of TISSA-UUM, members of the delegation from Nigeria, students and also members of the staff.
In his speech, the President of ICAN, Mallam Isma'ila Muhammadu Zakari expressed his delight with the warm welcome extended to him and the members of his delegation to UUM. He also shared the history of ICAN including the achievements and accomplishments.
He explained that ICAN is a prestigious professional accounting body and he sincerely hoped that the signing of the MoU will strengthen the international collaboration agenda between the two institutions and it will bring greater benefits for the students especially with the establishment of ICAN Malaysia District Society which will undoubtedly attract Nigerian and other West African students residing in Asia and in-home countries to UUM.
Meanwhile, UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak believed that the signing of the MOU between ICAN and UUM would open more avenues for future academic collaborations and engagements as the collaborative efforts will be effectively synchronised through the newly established, ICAN Malaysia District Society including the student exchange programmes, lectures and collaborative research projects in various fields.
"The recognitions and accreditations received by UUM from various international bodies have attracted international students, including those from Nigeria to pursue their studies in UUM".
Prof. Dato' Seri added that, UUM has embarked on several journeys of synergistic academic collaborations with institutions of higher learning in Nigeria including the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria; Bayero University Kano (BUK), Kano; Kaduna State University, Kaduna; and Kano State Polytechnic, Kano and now with ICAN.

The appointment of two University key office bearers as new members of the University Management Committee (JPU) has strengthened the university's management machinery to realize UUM's strategic agenda.
During the UUM Key Office Bearers 2018 Installation Ceremony, Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah was appointed as UUM COB Assistant Vice-Chancellor while Prof. Dr. Mohd Amy Azhar Mohd Harif was appointed as the Senior Director of the Enterprise and Financial Source Generation Department.
Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the faith entrusted in him by the Vice-Chancellor and university leadership to lead the UUM COB as the newly elected Assistant Vice-Chancellor which also indirectly made him a member of the JPU.
According to him, he expressed hope to become a constructive member in decision-making at the university's executive level and work closely in collaboration with all members of the JPU, UUM had been on track to continue driving the strategic agenda by becoming the Top 200 world universities by 2020.
At the same time, as the UUM COB Assistant Vice-Chancellor, he and the dean as well as the denizens at UUM COB will ensure that work would be in progress to ensure that the special agenda to position the subject ranking for UUM Business Management or the programme itself would be amongst the top 100 in the world by the year 2020.
"I hope that this aspiration can be realized and together with the denizens of UUM COB, we hope to bring about innovations in which we will truly become a competitive and innovative group in the context of becoming an example to other Business Schools as well as reference to the current Business Schools available.
Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Mohd Amy Azhar said the establishment of the new department was a strategic move that would organize and empower the university's financial generation opportunities.
Prof. Dr. Mohd Amy Azhar, a professor at the School of Economics, Finance and Banking, thanked the Vice-Chancellor and university management for putting their trust in him to help the university generate financial resources.
Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman and Prof. Dr. Mohd Amy Azhar were among the 83 University key office bearers who received their respective letters of appointment from Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak at EDC Hotels & Resorts, yesterday.

Alor Setar, 29 October – The panel members of the 2018 Budget Discussion corroborated that the 2018 Budget tabled by the Premier was a prudent budget which took into account the people's needs and also the government capabilities.
The members of the panel for 2018 Budget Discussion were three prominent figures from various backgrounds i.e. the Kedah State Deputy Secretary (Development), Dato' Ammar Shaikh Mahmood Naim; Professor of Economics, Prof. Dr. Abdul Razak Chik and the Director of the Economic and Financial Policy Institute (EcoFI) UUM, Prof. Dr. Jamal Ali. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Dato' Dr. Amir Hussin Baharudin from the School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB) UUM.
The 2018 Budget Discussion with the theme, "Negaraku: Membentuk Masa Hadapan" (My Country: Shaping the Future) was jointly organised by EcoFI and the School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB), UUM at the TH Hotel, today.
The moderator, Prof. Dato' Dr. Amir Hussin stated that, Budget 2018 was inclusive because it encompassed all states and met the needs of people from all walks of life including newborns in the country.
In addition, the panellists also discussed the increase in the country budget allocation from MYR260.8 billion to MYR280.25 billion and how the government will manage the income and expenditure as well as the country's debt for the benefits of the people.
The closing ceremony of the 2018 Budget Discussion was officiated by the Deputy Dean of SEFB, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Aznor Ahmad.
Bagi meraikan kepulangan bekas pelajar UUM COB khasnya, Pejabat Pembangunan Pelajar dan Alumni COB (PPA COB) telah menganjurkan Hi-tea With UUM COB Alumni di EDC Hotels & Resorts, petang tadi.
Majlis tersebut dihadiri Yang Menjalankan Tugas Timbalan Naib Canselor (Akademik dan Antarabangsa), Prof Dr Yusnidah Ibrahim yang juga PNC UUM COB mewakili Naib Canselor.
Dalam ucapan beliau berkata, UUM sentiasa berusaha memastikan mempunyai hubungan erat dengan alumni dan gembira melihat kejayaan yang dikecapi semua alumni yang lahir dari universiti ini.
Katanya, alumni diharapkan dapat membantu untuk mempromosikan universiti, selain meningkatkan keterlihatan universiti di peringkat tertinggi.
"Dengan pencapaian demi pencapaian diperoleh UUM, saya harap alumni kita tidak merasa malu untuk mengaku lahir dari universiti ini, malah berasa bangga terutama apabila kedudukan UUM melonjak naik dalam QS Asia University Ranking yang diumumkan baru-baru ini dan meletakkan UUM di kedudukan ketujuh dalam Malaysia.
"Selain itu, saya harap dengan progam 'homecoming' ini dapat mengimbau kembali zaman belajar di UUM yang semakin berubah dalam tempoh 30 tahun penubuhan," katanya.
Sementara itu, wakil alumni, Dato' Lim Thean Shiang melahirkan rasa gembira kerana dapat kembali ke UUM setelah sekian lama.
Beliau yang merupakan Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Daya Material Berhad dan Pengarah MSM Malaysia Holdings Berhad berharap untuk melihat UUM menjadi Asia Harvard University pada masa hadapan.
Pada majlis itu turut dilancarkan UUM COB Students' Factsheet dan UUM COB Talent Inventory.
Terdahulu, beberapa alumni tersebut termasuk Pengurus Besar Coway Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Mohd Najib Abdul Hadi telah mengadakan kunjungan hormat ke atas Naib Canselor, Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak di Balai Tamu.
Hi-tea tersebut sempena program Alumni Homecoming Week berlangsung selama tiga hari mulai hari ini yang mana turut diadakan sesi syarahan oleh alumni UUM COB terlibat dan sesi alumni bersama Persatuan Pelajar COB.
Two members of the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) made the university proud when they were selected as recipients of two international scholarships to undergo two leadership programmes abroad.
Mr. Yuhan Satapo, a student of the Bachelor of Finance and Islamic Banking with Honours programme, received a scholarship from the Shibaura Institute of Technology to undergo a leadership programme in Japan. Only 15 students from across Asia have been offered this scholarship.
Meanwhile, Ms. Sitimariyae Waedueramae, also a student of the Bachelor of Finance and Islamic Banking with Honours programme, received the James A. Viehlan scholarship to attend the BGS Global Leadership Summit (BGS GLS) in Orlando, Florida, USA.
This scholarship, which is offered under the James Viehlan Foundation to BGS members worldwide (outside the United States), has made Ms. Sitimariyae one of its only two recipients worldwide.
The Dean of the Student Development and Alumni Office, College of Business (PPA COB), Dr. Hendrik Lamsali, said that both the scholarships were open to all undergraduates throughout the world and that the granting of the scholarships to two students of UUM was an unequivocal recognition of the newly established UUM Chapter of BGS.
