Kuala Lumpur, 11 August - A total of 50 outstanding students from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) were elected to membership in Beta Gamma Sigma UUM Chapter (BGS UUM Chapter). These students were selected from over 770 eligible applicants.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs), Prof Dr Yusnidah Ibrahim said, the students were elected after undergoing a rigorous selection process.
"The most critical criteria to be selected as a member of BGS is that students must achieve the first class level and be in the top 10% cent of their respective academic programmes.
"In addition, students must also be active in co-curricular activities and achieve a minimum SIRA scores of 100 marks. Shortlisted candidates will attend an interview session where leadership qualities, communication skills, problem solving and critical thinking were tested.
"In short, BGS members were not only assessed in terms of their Crystallized Intelligence but also their Fluid Intelligence," said Prof Dr Yusnidah during the Induction Ceremony of the BGS UUM Chapter 2018.
"Thus, in keeping with the mission of our university, I certainly hope that UUM and BGS can work together to prepare our young leaders for leadership roles by honing their holistic characteristics to ensure that they are ready to serve the global community," she added.
Only AACSB accredited universities can establish BGS which is the highest recognition that business students can attain at an AACSB accredited business school.
At present, there are only 566 BGS Chapters throughout the world and the majority of them are in the United States of America.
BGS UUM Chapter was established after UUM received the AACSB accreditation in 2015 and this is the first ever BGS Chapter in Malaysia and the fifth in Southeast Asia.
The first batch of BGS UUM Chapter members consists of the top 75 students from five schools under the College of Business (COB) and one student from the College of Law, Government and International Studies (COLGIS). These students came from six countries and are currently undergoing their studies in 14 different academic programmes.
Also present at the event were the Assistant Vice-Chancellor of UUMCOB, Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah; the Dean of Student Development and Alumni, College of Arts and Sciences (PPA UUM CAS), Dr. Massudi Mahmuddin and representatives from various schools in UUM.
