The 6th ASEAN Future Leaders Summit (AFLES) becomes a platform in producing future leaders amongst the university students from the ASEAN region.
Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) College of Business (COB) Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah, said he was confident the AFLES delegation of 180 students of ASEAN countries could become leaders in the future if they became mutually competitive and were able to expand the network with new partners through the programme.
According to him, AFLES afforded the students with a venue as well as a stepping stone to inculcate inspiration, knowledge and expand networks amongst the young leaders by means of helping them lead the communities in their respective countries.
"The University is no longer a place to study, but it is also a place to develop the mind as it requires a balance between learning and leadership exposures.
"All participants should take the opportunity made available through AFLES to foster cooperation without abandoning friends from any institutions or countries despite having different cultures," he said when he welcomed the delegates of the 6th AFLES at the UUM Convention Centre yesterday.
During the visit, the Advisor of AFLES, Assoc. Prof Dr Anees Jani Ali was taken on a tour around the campus which included a visit to the UUM Welcome Centre and the go-kart circuit, before she proceeded to Hatyai, Thailand in the afternoon.
Prof Dr Haim Hilman also welcomed the participants of AFLES to pursue Masters and Doctorate in UUM which is known to be amongst the best and eminent management university in the Asian region. He also briefed the participants on UUM's achievements and latest position in the QS World University Rankings.
A total of 180 students from various ASEAN universities participated in the AFLES 2018 which was not only filled with leadership activities, lectures and training for 13 days, but there were also activities which helped participants hone their soft skills.
AFLES was organized by the Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Thailand and UUM through the Student and Alumni Development Office (PPA COB), AFLES's strategic partner at the UUM level since the year 2016.
